The fragrances and benefits of essential oils are endless when you learn how to blend essential oils. If you’re just getting started on your essential oil journey, you’ve come to the right place to learn everything there is to know about creating the perfect blend for every occasion.

Just like creating a perfume or specific scent, there is a science behind blending essential oils correctly. By the end of this article, you’ll know three methods to base your blends and example blends to try yourself.

Why Blend Essential Oils?

If you can purchase essential oil fragrances, why take the time to mix and match different ones? Not only does blending allow you to tap into your creative side and practice another method of self-expression, but you can personalize the aromas and benefits to your likings and needs.

Let’s also not forget how much fun it can be to experiment with different fragrances and discover new favorites.

The Three Rules of Blending

There are three methods you should follow when it comes to blending essential oils.

  1. Fragrance
  2. Notes
  3. Effects

While each of these rules relies upon similar standards, they each have their own differentiation and method to create the perfect blend.

Essential Oil Fragrances

The first thing you should know about essential oils is that there are eight different scent families. If you don’t know about these families and their benefits, go ahead and read our guide to essential oil scent families before continuing with this article- it will help a lot!

To review, though, the eight families include:

  1. Citrus
  2. Floral
  3. Herbaceous
  4. Woody
  5. Spicy
  6. Camphoraceous
  7. Resinous
  8. Earthy

To blend essential oils purely for the sake of their fragrance is a great opportunity to play with different scents and achieve a specific atmosphere. For example, you may want to create a scent that is perfect for the holiday season. You can do this by mixing and matching scent families.

Blend Essential Oils Based on Fragrance

Now that we know why you might blend essential oils based on their fragrance let’s explore which scent families work well together.

  1. Citrus - blends well with floral, woody, herbaceous, and spicy
  2. Floral - blends well with citrus, spicy, and woody
  3. Herbaceous - blends well with woody, spicy, and camphoraceous
  4. Woody - blends well with floral, citrus, herbaceous, spicy, and camphoraceous
  5. Spicy - blends well with floral, woody, and citrus
  6. Camphoraceous - blends well with citrus, woody, herbaceous, and earthy
  7. Resinous - blends well with citrus and floral
  8. Earthy - blends well with woody and camphoraceous

When blending these scent families, be sure to add equal parts to the mixture at first. Then you can experiment with different ratios until you discover your new favorite fragrance.

    Example Fragrance Blend to Try

If you want to get some experience with blending fragrances, try this blend:

    Lavender + Lemon + Petitgrain

    Essential Oil Notes

Another way to categorize essential oils is based on their notes. There are three classifications that consider how long it takes for the fragrance to evaporate. From these notes, you can blend and create your own new mixture.

    Essential oil notes include:

    1. Top - this scent evaporates the fastest but is the first one you smell and is usually distinctive; floral and citrus scents are considered top notes
    2. Middle - this scent is smooth and soft while binding top and base notes; herbaceous and spicy scents are considered middle notes
    3. Base - this scent is heavy and the slowest to evaporate, leaving a longer-lasting fragrance; woody and resinous scents are considered base notes

Blend Essential Oils Based on Notes

The trick to perfecting an essential oil blend based on their notes is the 30/50/20 rule. This means 30% of the mixture consists of top notes, 50% is middle notes, and 20% is base notes.

The best way to keep this ratio is to count in drops. For example, if your blend consists of 20 drops, 6 should be top note oils, 10 should be middle note oils, and 4 should be base note oils.

You can also mix and match the different oils used for the notes. Just remember to keep the ratio the same. For example, using two different top note oils, you’ll add 3 drops of each to the mixture we created above.

    Example Note Blend to Try

If you want to experiment with blending essential oils based on their notes, try these examples:

    6 drops Spearmint + 10 drops Lavender + 4 drops Frankincense

    3 drops Bergamot + 3 drops Eucalyptus + 10 drops Tea Tree + 4 drops Sandalwood

    Essential Oil Effects

Many people use essential oils for their revitalizing effects and health benefits. Each oil has its own list of effects, but you can mix two different kinds to experience both of their benefits at once.

The four effects we’ll focus on for blending include:

    1. Relaxing
    2. Grounding
    3. Energizing
    4. Cleansing

Based on the essential oils that fall into these categories of effects, you can blend them to optimize their benefits.

Blend Essential Oils Based on Effects

This may be the simplest method to blend essential oils because there are only two rules.

The first is you can blend relaxing and grounding oils together. This will help calm you and let you unwind from a tough day.

The second is to blend energizing and cleansing oils together. This blend can elevate your mood and bring positivity.

Your decision of how you would like to blend your essential oils should be based on what you would like the effects to achieve.

    Example Effect Blends to Try

If you’re looking to unwind after a long day at work, try this blend:

    Frankincense + Lavender + Eucalyptus

To get ready for the day, clear your mind, and boost your energy, try this blend:

Remember, this blend should be equal parts of each oil.
