Bergamot FCF
Description
Latin name: Citrus bergamia
Country of origin: China
Part of the plant: Rinds
Obtained by: Cold pressed
Properties: Antiseptic, deodorizing, antiviral, antidepressant, balancing, uplifting and refreshing.
Bergamot essential oil is extracted from the rind of the bergamot fruit, which is a citrus fruit that is commonly used in flavorings and perfumes. However, bergamot essential oil contains a chemical compound called bergapten, which can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight and increase the risk of sunburn or other skin damage. This compound also makes bergamot essential oil phototoxic, meaning that it can cause skin irritation or burns when exposed to sunlight or other sources of UV light.
To address the phototoxicity issue, a type of bergamot essential oil called Bergamot FCF (Furanocoumarin Free) has been developed. Bergamot FCF essential oil is created by removing the bergapten compound through a process of distillation or vacuum fractional distillation, which eliminates the phototoxicity issue. This makes Bergamot FCF essential oil safe to use in skin and hair care products without the risk of causing skin irritation or burns when exposed to sunlight.
In terms of benefits, Bergamot FCF essential oil shares the same therapeutic properties as regular bergamot essential oil, such as its calming and uplifting effects on mood, its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, and its support for healthy skin and hair. However, Bergamot FCF essential oil is safer for use in skin care products and can be used more widely in formulations without the need for caution regarding sun exposure.
